Weekly Update December 16, 2012

This year our class is putting together a Christmas Hamper for a family of three, a Mom and two children. Hamper items are due Monday.  If someone would like to volunteer to deliver the hamper on Dec. 18 or 19 please let me know. I will let the family know what time works best for delivery.


Secret Santa begins this week of Dec. 17-21. I'm not so sure how secret it is!!!

Blue School shirts must be worn for the Forks Performance on Monday and on Wednesday for the Christmas Concert Performance at School.

Camp--Information will be sent out in the new year. For planning purposes the dates are June 17-19.

Social Studies--Students will continue Ch. 3 on Interaction after the break.

Weekly Update December 9, 2012

This year our class will be putting together a Christmas Hamper for a family of three, a Mom and two children.  The students have selected their items to bring for the hamper and should bring them this week.  If someone would like to volunteer to deliver the hamper on Dec. 18 or 19 please let me know.  I will let the family know what time works best for delivery.

Students have also decided to participate in Secret Santa this year.  The limit is $10-15 and can be give in one gift or multiple gifts the week of Dec. 17-21.  I'm not so sure how secret it is!!!

Field Trip forms are due on Wednesday for the Forks Band Performance.

ELA--Rough Copy with two proofreader's marks is due on Dec. 11.  Your child may ask you to be one of the proofreaders as well as a classmate or myself.  The final copy of the story is due Dec. 17 and will be presented that week.  We have begun working on Miracle on Maple Hill our Christmas Novel study.  There will be a spelling test on Friday with words from Week 13 & 14 vocabulary.

Art--Students are completed an Art Project for Fall Supper and will be completing a project for Remembrance .

Math--Gr. 7--Students are working on Ch. 3, Geometry and Measurement. The have completed They should finish the chapter this week with a test on Thursday.

Math--Gr. 8--Students are working through Ch. 3 on the Pythagorean Theorem. They will complete the chapter this week with a test on Thursday.


SS--Students have begun Ch. 2 on Movement--Population, Migration, etc. We have discussed the articles on Movement of Population and will look at population density this week.  We will also focus on Remembrance Day.

Weekly Update October 28, 2012

Students will be involved this week with Pumpkin Decorating and the Costume Parade on Wednesday, Oct. 31 p.m.  Students can dress up for the parade but we ask that the costumes be appropriate for school:  no masks, blood, weapons, witches or ghosts.

Along with our theme this year, "Christ Serves Us, Christ Serves Through Us", we will be collecting items for CLWR (Canadian Lutheran World Relief) to assemble We Care School Supply Kits.  For October we ask students to bring in sets of 3 lined notebooks.  November is sets of 10 unsharpened pencils, a sharpener and an eraser.  The collection bucket is outside of Ms. Meilleur's door.

ELA--Students have completed their rough drafts of their creative writing assignment for Halloween and have had it proof read by me and a peer. They will complete the final copy and present on Wednesday.  We are continuing with our Short Stories unit which includes social skills.

Math--Gr. 7--Students are working on Ch. 3, Geometry and Measurement. The have completed Unit 1 & 2 with parallel and perpendicular lines.

ELA--Students have begun a creative writing assignment for Halloween. We have also started a Short Stories unit which includes social skills.

ELA--The students presented their All About Me Projects and received their assessments. Thy have begun a creative writing assignment for Halloween. We will begin Short Stories this week as well.

Math--Gr. 7--Are continuing with Ch. 2, Operations on Decimal Numbers.

Math--Gr. 8--Students have completed Ch. 2 on Ratios, Rates and Proportions. They will complete the Chapter Review tomorrow with a test on Tuesday.

SS--Students are creating their own ecozones including climates, geological landforms, water bodies, etc.

Science--Students have been learning about sustainability.

Happy Thanksgiving!


Many of you did not respond to my email regarding Fort Whyte Raffle Tickets. I didn't have a chance to contact you directly. The tickets will be handed out on Tuesday. If you are interested please let me know. The profit of selling the tickets will go directly to your child to cover camp costs.

Please be aware that there have been several cases of lice reported in the school. Check your child regularly for nits to ensure that they are nit free. Please notify the school if you discover lice or nits to continue our precautions.

ELA--The students handed in their All About Me Project on Friday. Students will be presenting three of their written items in class Tuesday and Wednesday as well as showing students their creative covers and Coat of Arms. We will begin Short Stories after presentations are complete.

Weekly Update Sept. 30, 2012

What a beautiful weekend! I hope everyone had the opportunity to enjoy it.....we will experience fall and winter soon!


You should have received a letter and information regarding head lice. Please be aware that there have been several cases reported in the school. Check your child regularly for nits to ensure that they are nit free. Please notify the school if you discover lice or nits to continue our precautions to rid the school of this vigilant pest. ELA--The students will be completing their All About Me Project this week. The due date for this project will be October 5, Friday.

Religion--Students have been working on their banner to present in chapel on Oct. 5.

Math--Gr. 8--completed Ch.1 with a test that will be returned to them for signing tomorrow. They have begun Ch. 2 on Ratios, Rates and Proportions.

SS--We continued to work on time zones and will be planning a trip using time zones and flights. Students also started looking on ecozones.

Weekly Update Sept. 23, 2013

Welcome Fall!


Please make sure to return the student forms that you received the first week of school. These forms will enable your child to participate in Intra-murals as well as use the technology lab. Please also return a signed copy of the IPod use letter sent home with your child on Friday. A copy is attached for you.

The students will participate in a Terry Fox Walk at the school on Sept. 27 at 1:00. Students should wear their school shirts for this event. All are welcome to join us.

ELA--Students have a spelling test on Monday, the first of the year. The students have been working on their All About Me Project. Three rough drafts were due on Friday, four more will be due on Tuesday. The due date for this project will be the first week of October.

Weekly Update Sept. 16, 2012

The students are settling in well into a new school year. They should have brought home their school photo information for you to place your order online for photos. Any questions you might have can be answered by contacting Ryan David Photography directly, either phone or email.


Please make sure to return the student forms that you received a week ago in a folder back to the school. These forms will enable your child to participate in Intra-murals as well as use the technology lab.

ELA--We have started or routine for the year. Students will be working on weekly grammar, vocabulary, spelling sheets with a spelling test every two weeks. They have written a summer summary, have completed an in class reader response and we have talked about "Filling Buckets". I will be handing out an All About Me Project on Monday for the students to complete. No Due Date yet but likely it will take them two weeks to complete.

Math--Gr. 7--started Ch.1 on Graphing and Transformations. They will have at least one quiz this week.

Math--Gr. 8--started Ch. 1 on Representing Data on Graphs. They will also have at least on quiz this week.

Welcome Back

I hope the start of school has gone well for your families.


We have just done the basics in class and will start into all of our subjects full swing next week. Shops is tomorrow afternoon. The students will walk down to Nelson McIntyre as a group. They will be dismissed at 3:47. Please make arrangements with your child as to where you will meet them for pick-up. There will be a group of students walking back to school as they are in after school care. I will double check with the students tomorrow morning to make sure they know where you will meet them after they are dismissed from Shops.

Rally Sunday will be on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 10:00 a.m. at Beautiful Savior Lutheran School. A barbecue will follow that is hosted by Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. Families are asked to bring a dessert for this function. I hope to see you there.

Thank-you to Mr. Stark, Mr. & Mrs. Mourant, and Mr. Katyrynuik for driving the students to camp and back. Also thank-you to Mr. K for staying with us and supervising the boys cabin at Luther Village. I think the class really enjoyed Luther Village and the activities. The food was great and our camp counselors did a fantastic job! I will be getting some feedback from the students this week and will hopefully start planning for camp early next year.


ELA--The students have presented their creative writing stories. They did a great job. They will be presenting their final novel projects for all three novels on Monday and we will be finishing our portfolios for the year. We will be viewing Where the Red Fern Grows and The Boy with the Striped Pajamas on Thursday next week. Students can bring in movie snacks to view these movies in the a.m.

Social Studies--The students will be completing some research/worksheets on Reformation Monday.

Weekly Update June 18, 2012

Thank-you to the families for attending BSLC on Sunday and to the Grade 8s for presenting great speeches. Awesome job!


Camp Information--All students need to arrive at the school between 8:00 and 8:15. We will be leaving the school at 8:30 to arrive at Luther Village at 12:00. On Thursday we will arrive back at the school by 3:30. The Year-End BBQ starts at 4:30. I have all contact information with me in case I need to reach anyone. The kids are really excited!!! Pack for rain!!

Health--We have completed our Sex Health Unit.

ELA--The students will start presenting their creative writing stories on Friday. They will also be hand-in their last final novel project and presenting all of their previous ones. We have now completed our last Spelling. We will be viewing Where the Red Fern Grows and The Boy with the Striped Pajamas next week.

Social Studies--Students have completed their chapters on the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The will be completing the year with Reformation and Revolutions.

Weekly Update June 10, 2012

Camp Information--Final payments were due on Friday. Thanks to those who have handed them in already. Students should be at the school between 8:00 and 8:15 on June 19th. We will be leaving promptly at 8:30 to arrive at Luther Village by 12:00 p.m. Please make sure to follow the packing list. The students and I have discussed our activities, packing items, etc. A camp schedule is attached.


Health--We will be starting our Sex Health Unit on Monday. If you have any questions, please contact me at the school.

ELA--The students are working on their final novel. They have handed in their final project on their second novel. There are no Reader Responses due for June. The students are working on a story for the last two weeks instead of writing Power Paragraphs. They will present their story the last week of school. We are completing our last week of Spelling.

Math-- Gr. 7s should have brought home their Ch. 12 Test for signing. The Gr. 8s have now completed Ch. 12--Tessellations

Social Studies-- Students have completed their chapter on the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas. They will have a quiz on Monday. They will be peer-teaching their chapter on the Middle Ages as well as creating their own quiz questions. We will be ending the year with the Renaissance, Reformation and Revolutions.

Camp Information--Thank you to families for handing in forms on Friday. Some forms were sent home to be finalized. I will be sending them to Luther Village this week. The remainder of the trip cost will be sent to you in a separate email and due in early June.


Health--I sent home a permission slip on Friday to be signed for students to participate in the Sex Health Unit. Please sign and return it by Wednesday.

ELA--The students will finish their second novel tomorrow. Their final project for their second novel will be due on June 8. They will begin their last novel and will have their first Meeting on Wednesday, June 6. There are no Reader Responses due for June. The students will be completing a story for the last two weeks instead of writing Power Paragraphs. They will present their story the last week of school. Weekly Update April 29, 2012

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION--It was great to see some of you on Wed. at the chapel service. We hope you enjoyed your flowers made by the Gr. 7/8s.


Field Trip Forms--Famine forms were sent home as well as a commitment form for Ascension Day Service on May 17.


Volunteers Needed--Our class prepared two thank-you cards for Winnipeg Harvest and Siloam Mission. We need volunteers to deliver them as well as a cheque to Winnipeg Harvest. Some of the students showed some interest but I haven't heard back from anyone. If anyone would be interested in delivering these cards could you please let me know a.s.a.p.

ELA--We have reviewed Literature Circles and expectations for the groups. We will be starting novel studies to end the year. The students will be continuing their presentations on Bullying/Cyber Bullying. Four Reader Responses are due on May 27.


Math-- Gr. 7s will be starting Ch. 11 on Linear Relations on Monday. Their tests will go home for signing then. Gr. 8s will be finishing Ch. 10 with a test on Tuesday. They will start Ch.11 on Probability later this week.

Weekly Update April 29, 2012

Thank-you to Ms. Kuhl for organizing the field trip to Winnipeg Harvest this week as well as the presentation for Siloam Mission. Both were very informative and the student's enjoyed them.


Grade 7/8 Camp--Luther Village--A deposit of $150.00 was due April 27.

Spring Tea--Thank you so much to all of the parents and students who helped out with our annual Spring Tea. It was well-attended, fun and delicious!


VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION--This Wednesday morning our school will be hosting a volunteer appreciation event. This event will take place after an early chapel (8:45 am – right after O Canada) around 9:15 am. The classes will be sharing a short presentation with our volunteers to thank them for everything they do for our school community.

ELA--The students successfully raised $367.00 for Winnipeg Harvest last week by selling ice cream. They have completing their unit on Poverty and their action project to help the homeless in Winnipeg. We will be going over Literature Circles and starting novel studies to end the year. We will be writing comparative paragraphs this week and will be continuing with our spelling units. Three Reader Responses are due on April 30.


Math-- Gr. 7s are continuing to work through Ch. 10 on Patterns and Expressions. They should finish this chapter this week with a test at the end of the week. Gr. 8s will be bringing home their test for signing on Ch. 9. They have started Ch. 10 on Linear Relations.

Social Studies-- Students have completed their study on Ancient Rome. They will begin looking at the Transition to the Modern World this week.


Science-- Students worked on the laws of reflection and refraction.

Weekly Update April 22, 2012

This is Ms. Kuhl's last week with us. She graduates with her Bachelor of Education in May from the University of Winnipeg. She has done a fabulous job and the students and I will truly miss her. We thank her for being with our class this year. We wish her good luck in her job ventures and her upcoming wedding.


Grade 7/8 Camp--Luther Village--Information has been sent in a separate email. A deposit of $150.00 is required by April 27.


Spring Tea--Students have been asked to volunteer to serve at the Tea on Sat., April 28. If they are able to volunteer please fill out the permission form and check off the time they will be available. Please remember that the Tea has a Mad Hatter theme so be sure to wear your weird and wacky hats. Bake Sale Table Donations for the Gr. 7/8 class is bars/dainties. Please have donations at the school on Fri., April 27.

Field Trip Forms--Two forms were sent out last week. One was for our Earth Day activity happening around the school tomorrow, April 23 and the other is for Wed., April 25 for our trip to Winnipeg Harvest. Please make sure they are signed and returned to the school by tomorrow a.m.

ELA-- Students have continued their action project to help the homeless in Winnipeg: they are fund raising money by selling ice cream on Wednesday and Friday and will be volunteering time to help at Winnipeg Harvest on Wednesday afternoon. Some students will be doing short presentations for the other classes to raise awareness. We will have a guest speaker from Siloam Mission come on Thursday morning. This week students will be working on a report or letter explaining the importance and their contributions to the action project. It is due on Friday, April 30. Three Reader Responses are due on April 30.


Religion-- Students will be working on short stories/dialogues on Jesus' response to the poor. They will present these at chapel on Wednesday.


Math-- Gr. 7s wrote a test on integers last week and it will be sent home Monday for signing. Gr. 7s have just started the next unit on patterns and expressions. Gr. 8s will be completing Ch. 9 on Linear Expressions this week with a test on Tues. or Wed. They will start Ch. 10 on Linear Relations later this week.

Social Studies-- Students will continue discussing daily life in Ancient Rome and begin looking at government.


Science-- Students completed a quiz on light and the colour theories. This week we will look at laws of reflection and refraction.

Weekly Update April 15, 2012

Welcome Back Winter! I sure hope the weather gets a little nicer and we can celebrate Spring again.


Grade 7/8 Camp--Luther Village has been tentatively scheduled for June 19-21. The costs will be calculated once we can confirm transportation and a male volunteer to accompany me and the students.
An information meeting will be held at the school on April 18 at 7:00 p.m. Megan, from Luther Village, will be out to give a presentation on the camp and what it has to offer. At this time we can discuss any questions you my have. A deposit will need to be made immediately after this information session.
If you are able to drive to and from the camp (approx. 3 hrs. from Winnipeg) or can volunteer to supervise at camp (male required), please let me know as soon as possible. You can check out the camp website at: www.luthervillage.ca
All parents and students are requested to attend.


Spring Tea--Students have been asked to volunteer to serve at the Tea on Sat., April 28. If they are able to volunteer please fill out the permission form and check off the time they will be available. If they are interested in a craft/garage sale table they can submit their form to the office as well.


ELA-- This past week students started an action project to help the homeless in Winnipeg: they have divided responsibilities up as they plan to raise money and organize a field trip (possibly to Winnipeg Harvest). We also hope to have a guest speaker from Siloam Mission come during the last week in April. They will continue some research and planning this week. The students will be discussing some sensitive topics during this unit. If you have any questions please ask your child and/or direct questions to me via email or call the school. Three Reader Responses are due on April 30.


Math-- The Gr. 7s are working on adding and subtracting integers and will have a test this coming Tuesday or Wednesday. Gr. 8s have begun Ch. 9 on Linear Expressions/Relations.

Social Studies-- Students have been working on Religion in Rome projects that are due this Tuesday. Later this week we will be discussing daily life in Ancient Rome.


Science-- We started a unit on optics this past week, discussing properties of light and the additive and subtractive colour theories. This week we will look at laws of reflection and refraction.

Art-- Students have started creating paintings and hats to decorate at the 'Mad Hatter' themed Spring Tea. They will finish up their projects this week.

Weekly Update March 12, 2012

Welcome Spring!


Report cards went home on Wednesday, March 14. Student Led Conferences will be on Mar. 20 & 21 after school. Sign up sheets are posted on the bulletin board in the front hallway. If the times do not work for you or you would like to discuss something individually, let me know and I'll try to accommodate you individually as soon as I can. I will be contacting families Monday afternoon or evening if they have not signed up for a conference. Thanks for coming and viewing your student's progress.

Mme Helene will be available on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings as well. If you would like an individual conference with her you may email her to set that up. She will be available in the classroom for questions during the conferences otherwise. Email: ecarty@bsls.ca
