Weekly Update December 13, 2013

ELA--Students will complete the Christmas Novel Study--Searching for David's Heart.  They will complete a final project on the novel when we return after the break.  Two Reader Responses are due on December 16.

ELA--Students continue to work on Adjectives and Adverbs through their Power Paragraphs.  We started a Short Stories Unit about True Courage.  Three Reader Responses are due on November 29.

CLWR--Thank you to Mrs. Demetrioff and Mr. Greenhill for driving on Thursday morning for our trip to CLWR.  The students learned a lot and enjoyed completing "quality control" for a bin of kits.  Hopefully we will be able to return to help out again this year.

ELA--Students continue to write stories on chosen topics.  They will use the Elements which were discussed in class. Rough Drafts will be due this week.  Four Reader Responses are due on November 1.

WE CARE KITS--Thank you so much for bringing in your items.  The students were able to assemble 13 Care Kits and present them to the CLWR Reps at Chapel last Wednesday.  To complete our service project we will be going to CLWR on Thursday morning for a tour and to help assemble more kits.

ELA--Students viewed each others Timeline Projects on Friday.  They looked great!  We will be starting a Story Writing/Elements Unit. Spelling Worksheets are due each Friday with a Spelling Test as well.  Four Reader Responses are due on November 1. 

Math--Gr. 7--Students are working on Ch. 2--Operations on Decimal Numbers.  Test will be at the end of the week.

ELA--We are continuing to work on our Timeline Project. Students need to write an autobiography and find at least three pictures from each year of their life to scrapbook electronically or manually.  This project tentatively is due on September 30.  Spelling Worksheets are due each Friday with a Spelling Test as well.  Two Reader Responses are due on September 27.  We will also be working on comprehension activities and adjectives/adverb activities.

Math--Gr. 7--Students will be completing Ch. 1--Co-ordinates and Design with a test on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Math--Gr. 8--Students will be completing Ch. 1--Representing Data with a test on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Social Studies--Students worked on some timeline activities working with dates using BCE and CE.  We will be talking about what history means to them and some vocabulary items.

Welcome Back, September 3, 1013

Welcome Back!

Tomorrow is our first day of classes and the Gr. 7/8s will have Shops at Nelson MacIntyre in the afternoon. I will walk the students to class in the afternoon. Please make sure to plan on pick up arrangements with your student. They may walk back to school and wait for you here or they can be picked up at Nelson Mac at an agreed upon location at 3:47 p.m. The students start with Food & Nutrition. Shops will be Day 2, p.m.

There will be no canteen this week. Please send a nut-free lunch with your child.

There will be no Chapel tomorrow as it is the first day of classes. Our first Chapel will be Sept. 11.

The Gr. 7/8 class will have a student teacher joining us from the University of Winnipeg, Mr. Ryan Malech. He will be with us various times over the year: full days this week, Mon. & Wed. afternoons until Nov. 15, then full days until Christmas.

We also have two EAs assisting students this year; Mrs. Jaworski (Mrs. J.) and Mrs. Cherwonick (Mrs. C.)

ELA--Students will be presenting their Tuck Everlasting Final Projects tomorrow.  We have started a Poetry Unit.  The students will be writing their own Poetry Anthologies this week with 20 original poems and 5 others.  This anthology will be due on May 13.

Math--Gr. 7--Students will be writing their test for Ch. 10--Patterns and Expressions on Monday.  They will start Ch. 11--Solving Equations.

Math--Gr. 8--Students will be writing their test for Ch. 10--Solving Linear Equations on Monday.  They will start Ch. 11--Probability.

CLWR--April Collection--Money for Shipping


ELA--The students have started a class novel study including literature circle positions on Tuck Everlasting.  We will be reading the novel in class and working through the questions, vocabulary and having literature circle meetings for discussion through the next two weeks. Four Reader Responses are due on Thursday, Apr. 25.

Math--Gr. 7--Students are completing Ch. 9--Adding and Subtracting Integers and will have a test on Tuesday.

Math--Gr. 8--Students are completing Ch. 9--Linear Relations and will have a test on Tuesday.

Student Led Conferences--Thank-you everyone for attending Student Led Conferences.  I am glad that you could share your child's successes and listen to their goals for Term 3.


Country Night--Ms. Proctor with be in on Mar. 19 to plan the presentation for Thursday evening that some of the students will be helping out at.

ELA--Students will be self evaluating and peer evaluating their Children's Bible Stories tomorrow.  They will also be completing various activities on comprehension, verbs (past, present, future), etc.  Reader Responses are due on Thursday, Mar. 21.

Math--Gr. 7--Students are completing Ch. 8--Circles.  They will have a test at the end of the week.

ELA--Students will be writing a test on nouns this week.  Artists in the School will be completing a "Drama Component"  for the next two weeks.  Students will have one hour each day to participate in learning new drama concepts and put together a performance for the school which will happen on Mar. 15.

Math--Gr. 7--Students have begun Ch. 8--Circles.

Math--Gr. 8--Students have started Ch. 8 on Integers.

Social Studies--Students are completing Ch. 4 on Human Development--The Value of Life. We have had many discussions about economies and Human Development Index.  We will start Ch. 5 this week on Global Rights.

Weekly Update February 10, 2013

CLWR--February Collection--small bar soaps and toothbrushes

ELA--We completed our Short Stories Unit on Social Justice. On Friday we watched Happy Feet as the movie correlates to many of our social justice topics as well as the environment discussed in Social Studies.  Students will be completing some group discussions/questions regarding the movie this week.  We will also be completing some comprehension activities and working on common and proper nouns.  Spelling test on Friday for Week 19 & 20.

Math--Gr. 7--Students will be completing Ch. 7--More Fraction Operations.

Math--Gr. 8--Students will start Ch. 7 on Volume this week.

Social Studies--Students are working on Ch. 4 on Human Development--The Value of Life. They are researching some small countries and describing the life of a common worker there.

Religion--Students will be working on a Children's Bible Story Project.  They will choose a children's bible story, create a story map to summarize it into approximately 12 pages and then will illustrate their story.  They will also be working on creating a class devotion to share.

During the month of January, we are collecting one small, simple toy (new, that does not require batteries) for our Learning and Living Kits that we are putting together for CLWR (Canadian Lutheran World Relief).

Please also remember Rehimet, our Compassion Canada sponsor child. We would like to collect $1.00/month from the students. If it is easier to bring it as one lump sum, please do so.

Camp--Information will be sent out this week. For planning purposes the dates are June 17-19. Camp will be at Luther Village, near Kenora, ON. I am finalizing some costs in regards to chaperones and drivers/transportation.

ELA--Final Projects on Miracle on Maple Hill are due on Thursday.  We will be going to MTYP on Thursday morning to see The Big League.  We will be finishing up our Short Stories Unit from before Christmas.
